What is the difference between Comics, Graphic Novels & Manga?

A lot of people often get confused if what’s the difference between a comic book, graphic novel & manga. We’re here to answer this.

Comic Book: They are illustrated stories and are published periodically like weekly, monthly and covers the complete story in multiple issues. They are comparatively short and can be quickly digested as mostly they are between 30-40 pages per issue.

Some examples of comics are: Chacha Choudhary, Batman, The Ocean in Me, Nagraj.

Graphic Novels: They are a full fledged book but illustrated. Unlike comics, the full story is covered in one graphic novel. They have deeper storylines and complete the full arc or narrative by the end of novel. They are length in size and are usually covered in more than 80-90 pages.

Some examples of graphic novels are: V For Vendetta by Alan Moore, Anya’s Ghost by Vera Brosgol, Kari by Amruta Patil.

Manga: Basically Japanese comic books are called Manga but there’s more to it. They have a different art style and a lot more detailed line work. They are also published periodically in episodes/chapters and have a major difference in reading style. While comics and graphic novels are read left to right, manga are read right to left. Also, they are not colored.

Some popular examples of manga are: Deathnote, One Piece, Attack on Titan.
